 About Rugby

In the 150 years since William Webb Ellis reputedly caught and ran with the ball during a game of association football at Rugby School, Warwickshire, England, rugby union has grown into a huge global sport.

The IRB Rugby World Cup is the third biggest sporting event on the planet and rugby 7s will return to the Olympics in 2016. This success on the global stage is only possible because of the thriving school, university and club competitions around the world.

One of the reasons for rugby’s rapid growth is that regardless of size, shape, age or gender, there is a type of rugby and a level of competition that is right for almost everyone.

Narberth Rugby Club was established in 2007 after several students from Lower Merion HS and Harriton HS approached Narberth Mayor Tom Grady about starting a rugby club.

Now heading into our 10th season the program has grown. In 2011, a summer camp flag rugby team was established for U11, to introduce them to the game and in 2012, the club established an U15 team and played matches in New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania and against a visiting side from New York. In 2013, the U15 played their first league season and the U19 shared top position in their league after going unbeaten against divisional teams. Presently the club has 70 players ranging in age from 9-18 years.
